What Is Information?

Kinds of Information: Facts, Opinions, and Stories

8 min 3 quiz questions

Not all information is the same! Some information tells us facts — things that are true and can be checked. Some information shares opinions — what someone thinks or feels. And some information tells stories — things that may be made up. Knowing the difference helps you use information wisely.

What Is a Fact?

A fact is something that is true and can be checked. You can look it up in a book or ask an expert to find out if it is true.

  • The sun rises in the east. (Fact — you can check this!)
  • Dogs have four legs. (Fact — you can count!)
  • Water freezes at 32°F. (Fact — scientists have measured this.)

What Is an Opinion?

An opinion is what someone thinks or feels. Opinions are not right or wrong — different people can have different opinions about the same thing.

  • Pizza is the best food. (Opinion — not everyone agrees!)
  • Summer is better than winter. (Opinion — some people love snow!)
  • That book was boring. (Opinion — someone else might love it.)

What Is a Story?

A story can be fiction (made up) or nonfiction (true). Fiction stories have characters and events that are invented. Nonfiction stories tell about real people and real events.

Clue Words

Opinion clue words: "I think," "I believe," "the best," "the worst," "should," "in my opinion." When you see these words, you know someone is sharing their opinion, not a fact.
