Most people type a question into a search engine and accept the first results. Learning advanced search techniques dramatically improves the quality and relevance of what you find.

Boolean Operators

Boolean operators are words that tell a search engine how to combine your search terms. They are the most powerful basic search tool available.

AND:Narrows a search by requiring both terms to appear. "climate AND policy" finds sources about both.

OR:Broadens a search by accepting either term. "teenager OR adolescent" finds sources using either word.

NOT:Excludes a term. "mercury NOT planet" finds sources about the element, not the planet.

Advanced Search Techniques

"Exact phrase" — quotation marks find exact phrases: "information literacy"
site: — limits results to a specific website: site:edu
filetype: — finds specific file types: filetype:pdf
Asterisk (*) — wildcard for unknown words: "climate * policy"

Use Multiple Search Strategies

If your first search does not find what you need, try synonyms, broader terms, or narrower terms. Research is iterative — refine your search based on what you find.
