AI Is a Tool, Not a Replacement

AI tools can help you brainstorm, organize ideas, and check your understanding. But using AI to do your thinking for you undermines your own learning and may violate academic integrity policies.

Appropriate Uses of AI in School

  • Brainstorming ideas and getting unstuck
  • Asking for explanations of concepts you do not understand
  • Getting feedback on your own writing
  • Generating practice questions to test your knowledge
  • Summarizing complex topics as a starting point for your own research

Inappropriate Uses of AI in School

  • Submitting AI-generated text as your own work
  • Using AI to complete assignments without engaging with the material yourself
  • Copying AI responses without verification or attribution
  • Using AI to take tests or quizzes on your behalf
AI Transparency:Being open about when and how you used AI tools in your work, following your school's or teacher's guidelines for disclosure.
Check Your School's AI Policy

Different teachers and schools have different policies about AI use. When in doubt, ask your teacher. Being transparent about AI use is always better than hiding it.

Protecting Your Privacy

Be careful about what personal information you share with AI tools. Do not enter your full name, school, address, or other identifying information into AI chatbots. Many AI tools store conversation data and use it for training.

AI Responses Reflect Training Data Biases

AI models are trained on human-generated text, which contains human biases. AI responses can reflect and amplify biases related to race, gender, culture, and more. Evaluate AI output critically.
