What Is Plagiarism?
Plagiarism is using someone else's words or ideas without giving them credit — as if they were your own. It is a form of dishonesty, even when done by accident.
Why Giving Credit Matters
When you use someone else's ideas, words, or research, you need to say where they came from. This is called citing your source. It is honest, it respects the creator's work, and it helps your readers find the original information.
Plagiarism:Using someone else's words or ideas without giving them credit.
Citation:A reference that tells readers where information came from.
How to Give Credit
- Name the author: "According to Jane Goodall..."
- Name the source: "In the book Wild Chimpanzees..."
- Use quotation marks for exact words: She wrote, "Chimpanzees are our closest relatives."
- List sources at the end of your work
Paraphrasing Is OK!
You do not always have to use exact words. You can paraphrase — put the idea in your own words — but you still need to give credit to the original source.
