What Is a Digital Footprint?

Every time you use the internet — searching, posting, commenting, or signing up for something — you leave a trace. This collection of traces is called your digital footprint.

Two Types of Digital Footprints

Active footprint: Things you intentionally post or share (photos, comments, messages)
Passive footprint: Data collected about you without you realizing (websites you visit, searches you make)

Why It Matters

Your digital footprint can last a very long time. Things you post today might still be visible years from now. Colleges, employers, and others can sometimes find information about you online. That is why it is important to think before you post.

Before posting anything online, ask: "Would I be comfortable if my teacher, parents, or future self saw this?" If not, do not post it.
